Commem 50c 1892 Columbian Expo Choice AU 58 Silver Coin WDEE-01

Commem 50c 1892 Columbian Expo Choice AU 58 Silver Coin WDEE-01

$28.00

Here is the very first commemorative half dollar the US issued -- the 1892 Columbian Exposition Commemorative Half Dollar. Held in Chicago in 1892 and 1893, this is the celebration for the 400th year of Columbus' famous voyage. Coins exist for both years. Has Columbus, facing right, on the obverse, and the Santa Maria, sailing left, above two hemispheres on the reverse. This coin is in pleasing Choice About Uncirculated 58, with original luster and strong strike. Has slight peripheral toning on the obverse. One small mark noted in upper hair on obverse. On the reverse, there are no spots or marks noted. Strong strike here as well. These were sold at the Exposition at $1.00 each. A few years later, the unsold ones were put into circulation, accounting for the well-circulated examples occasionally seen. This one is Very Choice AU, and very pleasing. Charles Barber designed the obverse, and George Morgan the reverse (both famous engravers at the US Mint). This coin has excellent detail on the high-relief designs. Excellent coin for the collector of Early Commemorative coins as the first one issued. A very pleasing and popular commemorative coin with silver and collector value. Thanks for looking. We are grateful. WDEE-01
