Commem 50c 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Ch VF Silver Coin WDEE-04

$40.00

Here is the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar. We grade this coin as Choice Very Fine. Purportedly issued in 1923 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, this coin was actually issued to fund the fair held in Los Angeles in 1923, with sole purpose to promote Hollywood and the filmmaking industry. The fair was a flop, the coins did not sell, and most of the 270,000 minted were put into circulation. No actual historical event was being commemorated with this coin, since the Monroe Doctrine was only coincidentally about 100 years past. The obverse depicts former presidents James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. The reverse depicts North America and South America touching at the Panama Canal. Light wear noted on the high points of the designs. No marks or spots noted. A pleasing and seldom-offered commemorative coin. Thanks for looking. We are grateful. WDEE-04
